Questions Clients Ask Before Starting

The questions that come up in the first conversation are rarely about returns. They are about process, trust, and what happens next.

Before anyone signs anything, they want to know how the work actually unfolds. The most common question is not about which fund to pick. It is about how we will work together and what the first few weeks look like. People want a clear sequence: what information we need, when we meet, and how decisions get made.

The second question is about fees. Not the headline number, but the total cost of the arrangement. Clients ask whether there are charges for the initial review, for rebalancing, or for a simple phone call in the middle of the year. A straight answer here saves a lot of back-and-forth later.

Another frequent question concerns control. People want to know who makes the final call on a trade or a withdrawal. The answer matters more than most advisors assume. Some clients want to approve every transaction; others want a set of rules and then to be left alone. Both are workable, but the arrangement has to be explicit from the start.

Then there is the question about what happens if the market drops. Not the theoretical version, but the practical one: what do we do in the first month of a downturn, and how do we avoid panic selling. Clients are often surprised that the plan includes a response to volatility, not just a target allocation.

Finally, people ask about the relationship itself. How often do we talk, who answers the email, and what happens if the advisor changes. These are reasonable concerns, and they deserve a direct answer rather than a brochure line. If you are preparing for a first conversation, bring these questions with you. They are the ones that actually shape the engagement.

If you are still deciding whether to start, it may help to read about what to prepare before a first consultation or to think through choosing a service format that fits. Both pieces cover the practical side of getting started.
